James Douglas Hamilton was a Captain in the Territorial Army Volunteer Reserve:

James Douglas Hamilton was born in 1942 at  Dungavel House, Strathaven, the second of the five sons of Douglas Douglas-Hamilton, the 14th duke of Hamilton, and the former Lady Elizabeth Percy, daughter of the 8th duke of Northumberland. 

In 1974, he married Susie Buchan, the daughter of the 2nd Lord Tweedsmuir and granddaughter of the novelist John Buchan.

His father was a much decorated pioneering aviator, who served in the RAF and made the first flight over Mount Everest in 1933.

He stood as MP for Hamilton in February 1974,  was. and was MP for Edinburgh West from 1974-1997 – and a Scottish Office Minister from 1987-1997. He was also a Scots Advocate.
