Despite the 6th and 7th Battalions having been disbanded in 1946, it was not long before they were reformed. Early in 1947,the decision was made by the government to re-raise the Territorial Army, which put the 6th and 7th on their feet again.
On 23 April 1947 a re-union dinner was held in the 7th Battalion Drill Hall at Copelaw Street, Glasgow. After the dinner, a short outline was provided of the conditions of service and the work that would be offered to the new battalion.
The 6th (Lanarkshire) Battalion, was reformed on 1 May with HQ at Hamilton
(A Coy) and Drill Halls at Motherwell (B Coy), Bothwell C Coy) and Wishaw (D Coy)
In 1950 there occurred the first of many contractions and changes to the structure of the Territorial Army which materially affected the Cameronians.
The 6th and 7th Battalions were amalgamated to form the 6th/7th Battalion The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) with HQ at Hamilton.
By 1953, the strength of the 6th/7th Battalion had risen to nearly 700; a large number of whom were were National Service Men, required to serve for three years in the Territorial Army on completion of their two years’ full-time service.
In December 1956, a further re-organisation was announced.
The government decided that only two of the existing ten Territorial Divisions would remain organised at full scale. As a consequence, The 52nd Lowland Division, which had been a mixed division with one Brigade of armour and one of infantry was converted to an Infantry Division.
Following a Defence White Paper in 1966, The Territorial Army was re-designated The Territorial and Army Volunteer Reserve (TAVR).
This abolished the former regimental and divisional structure of the Territorial Army and heralded the formation in 1967 of the 52nd Lowland Volunteers through the amalgamation of the territorial Battalions of the infantry Regiments of the former Lowland Brigades.
The name commemorated the 52nd (Lowland) Division of the Territorial Force, within which many of the Regiments’ antecedent Territorial Battalions served during the First and Second World
Wars.
Instead of forming reserve formations, the role of the new T A V R was to provide individual and unit reinforcements for the Regular Army. (https://www.theroyalscots.co.uk/the-territorial-army/)
In 1967, the 6th/7th Battalion was disbanded and concurrently reconstituted as two companies:
D Company The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), 52 Lowland Volunteers, formed in TVAR II at Hamilton.
B Company (6th/7th Cameronians (Scottish Rifles, The Royal Scots And Cameronians Territorials. formed in TAVR iii at Hamilton.
In 1968 the disbandment of the Regular element of the Regiment left the TAVR element as custodian of all Regimental traditions.
In 1969, at Hamilton, the TAVR element was reduced to cadre as 6th/7th (Territorial) Battalion, The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
In 1971 it was again, however, reorganised as two companies:
D Company The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), 1st Battalion, 52 Lowland Volunteers, formed in TVAR II at Hamilton
No.4 Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Company, 2nd Battalion, 52nd Lowland Volunteers at Motherwell, reconstituted from cadre.
In 1987, the Regimental HQ was disbanded leaving the T.A. element ‘without a parent’.
In 1992, the presence of the Cameronians in the TA was effectively ended when D Company was disbanded and No.4 Company reorganised as HQ Company 2nd Battalion (at Motherwell), and re-badged KOSB
